Down But Not Out

What a win today for the Yankees, facing the Angels today, the same Angels team with the best record in baseball, facing their ace and being down 5-0...what do the Yankees do? They storm right back to take the lead, they give up the lead and storm right back again and take the lead for good for a 14-9 win today at the Stadium. Big day for Xavier Nady who had 6 RBI's and who should have had 7 if it wasn't for Abreu's blunder on the bases and for Pudge who hit his first homer as a Yankee. The win was big because it sends the Yankees off on there most important road trip of the season on a high note, they're off to Texas for 4 games then to Anaheim for 3 and to Minnesota for 3 more. The next 16 out of 19 games for the Yankees are away from the Stadium and I feel that this stretch will make or break there season.

What is going on with the team from Queens? After winning 10 in a row they can't seem to do anything right anymore, going 1-5 on a road trip that took them to Miami and Houston. The good thing for the Mets is that they have the Padres at home this week before starting a big series with the Marlins over the weekend. The Mets might be without Wagner who's suppose to have an MRI on his forearm and I don't know if they have someone ready to step up and close out a close game if Wagner is not there.

I have to say that the Yankees comeback win against the major leagues leading Angels has to boost the Yankees confidence as the season continues on.
Nady was the big hitter today, as the Yankee lineup is looking pretty dangerous right now, if you're an opposing pitcher you better come prepared. I once mentioned that this Yankees lineup is like a softball lineup, where pretty much there is no rest if you're the pitcher who has to face them, especially now with the editions of Nady and Pudge.
But not to take anything away from the Yankees, this was a big win simply because this was the Angels. The Yankees still find themselves 5 games back and have to climb both the Sox's and the Ray's.
Still there is plenty of season to go, this giving the Yankees, what I think, enough time to get into the postseason. The Yankees get ready to face a Texas Ranger team that is still playing 500 baseball at 58-54, and then will face the Angels again for 3 more games in Anaheim.

As for the boys from Queens, things are getting to look a bit shaky with the way this weekend ended as the Mets get swept by the Astros and currently ride a 4 game losing streak. If you're a Mets fan like myself, you may start to get the feeling like the team may be in some kind of fragile state.
I woke up today with the news that John Maine was put on the 15 day DL, and that Billy Wagner may be breaking down himself, then the Mets go on to lose 4-0, to make matters worst.
Right now Jerry Manuel has to make some tough decision to keep his team afloat, with a banged up bullpen who cant seem to get anyone out, and the corner outfield situation.
Manuel has to keep pushing the right buttons like he was earlier when he took over. The Mets, looking for some help, and with Minaya not being able to get any back-up by the trade deadline, have looked into their farm system for help in hopes to bring some youthful energy to help revive the team.
Daniel Murphy and Eddie Kunz have been called up and have already appeared in the game today. The Mets are also looking to call up Pitching prospect Jonathan Niese for a helping hand. Niese will probably make his debut sometime this week as a starter to fill in for Maine. The Mets now will have to wait and see when, and if, they get back such players like Ryan Church and Luis Castillo who are still recovering from their injuries. Now the Mets come back home and look to get back on track with 3 vs. the last place Padres, and then 4 with the 2nd place Marlins. Jose Reyes continues his hot hitting raising his average to 306 and leading the NL in hits.

As we come down the stretch, both New York teams find themselves very well alive and very much in it as the City heats up and will wait to see who comes out to represent the city in October.
But there is still the possibility that New York may find themselves without a team in the postseason, which would be devastating to see.
